Quick answer

To fix a dog bed zipper, first work out what failed. If the teeth split open behind the slider, squeeze the slider gently with pliers to tighten it. If the zipper is stuck, rub graphite or soap along the teeth. If the slider is cracked or missing, replace it with a new slider that matches your zipper size. A zipper repair kit with replacement sliders covers all three, and you keep the cover.

Free fix vs. permanent fix

Free fix · 10 minutes

Tighten the slider with pliers

  • Zip down past the split and check that both rows of teeth line up and nothing is caught
  • Pinch the slider gently with pliers, a little at a time
  • Rub a pencil or a dry bar of soap over stuck teeth
  • Test it a few times before you refill the cover

How long it lasts: Weeks to months. A worn slider opens up again as it keeps stretching.

A new slider from a zipper repair kit

A zipper splits when the slider has stretched and no longer squeezes the teeth together. Pinching it back works for a while, but the metal keeps stretching. A new slider restores the grip and costs a few dollars, so you keep the washable cover you already own.

How long it lasts: Years. A new slider grips the teeth like the original did.

Why it happens

1

A stretched slider

Each zip pulls the slider open a tiny bit. After years of use the gap is too wide, the teeth stop locking behind it and the zipper splits open again.

2

A bulky insert straining the cover

Dog bed covers fit tight around thick foam. The zipper is pulled sideways each time you close it, which wears the slider and can pop teeth out.

3

Fur, dirt or dried detergent

Hair and grit jam the teeth, and dried detergent makes them stick. A jam forced shut bends the slider.

4

A missing tooth or torn tape

If teeth are missing, or the fabric tape has torn away from the teeth, no slider will hold. That needs new zipper tape or a stitched seam.

Try this first (free)

Do these in order, starting with the simplest.

  1. 1. Look closely at the zipper

Zip it down and check the teeth. Are both sides complete? Is any tape torn or a tooth missing? Is the slider cracked? What you find tells you which fix to use.

  2. 2. Clear out hair and grit

Brush the teeth with an old toothbrush and wipe them with a damp cloth. Let the zipper dry before you test it.

  3. 3. Free stuck teeth

Tool used: Graphite pencil or dry bar of soap

Rub a graphite pencil or a dry bar of soap along both sides of the teeth, then work the slider back and forth. Do not force it. A hard yank can bend the slider or pull teeth out.

  4. 4. Re-seat a split zipper

If it springs open behind the slider, zip the slider down past the split so the teeth separate cleanly. Then zip back up slowly, holding the fabric flat.

  5. 5. Tighten the slider

    Tool used: Needle-nose pliers

With needle-nose pliers, squeeze the slider's top and bottom plates together a very small amount, at the end where the teeth join. A tiny squeeze goes a long way. Too much and it jams. Test, and repeat if you need to.

  6. 6. Replace the slider

Tool used: Zipper repair kit with replacement sliders

If squeezing no longer helps, pull off the bottom stop with pliers, slide the old slider off and thread a new one on. Fit a new stop or sew a few thick stitches in its place. Match the size and the type: coil, molded plastic or metal.

When free fixes aren't enough

Squeezing a slider is a quick fix and can hold for months, but the slider keeps wearing, and a hard squeeze can crack it. If the zipper splits again within a week or two, or the slider has cracked, replace it. A new slider is cheap and restores the grip. If teeth are missing, or the tape has torn away from the teeth over a few inches, a slider will not help. Then you need a new zipper section sewn in, or you can stitch that stretch shut and open the cover from another seam.

How we picked: How we picked: this page is based on zipper-repair guides from sewing and clothing-care sources, zipper sizing charts, and what dog owners report in reviews of repair kits. We do not test products by hand.

How to read your zipper size and type

Flip the slider over and look at the back. Many are stamped with a number, and that number is roughly the width of the closed teeth in millimeters. Then look at the teeth. Coil zippers have a spiral of thread, molded plastic zippers have chunky individual teeth and metal zippers have shiny teeth. The new slider must match both the size and the type.

Keep the new zipper working

  • Zip the cover closed before you wash it, so the teeth do not snag.
  • Do not overstuff the bed or force a thicker insert into the cover.
  • Close the zipper slowly, with the fabric held flat.
  • Brush fur out of the teeth every few washes.

What to skip

Forcing the slider or gluing the teeth shut

Yanking a stuck slider bends it and rips teeth out. Glue locks the zipper shut so the cover can no longer come off for washing. Free the teeth with graphite and go gently.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dog bed zipper keep coming undone?
The slider has stretched and no longer squeezes the teeth shut. Tighten it with pliers, or replace it with a new slider if that stops working.
How do I know what size zipper slider I need?
Look for a number stamped on the back of the slider, such as 5, 8 or 10. If you cannot see one, measure the width of the closed teeth in millimeters, since the size is close to that number. Also check the type: coil, molded plastic or metal.
Can I use a paperclip or safety pin until the parts arrive?
A paperclip or key ring through the slider works as a temporary pull. A safety pin through the tape at the top holds the cover shut. Keep either out of your dog's reach, and take them off before your dog uses the bed.
Do I need to sew to replace a zipper slider?
Usually not. Most slider swaps need pliers to remove and refit the metal stop. Some stops are sewn, so keep a needle and thread handy.
