Low Shower Water Pressure? Descale First, Then Try a New Head

A weak spray usually means scale in the nozzles or a flow-limiting head, not a plumbing fault. Descale first, and a new head fixes what vinegar cannot.

Quick answer

Why is my shower water pressure low? Most often the shower head is clogged with mineral scale, or it has a flow restrictor that limits the spray. Soak the head in white vinegar and clear each nozzle. If the spray is still weak, a high-pressure shower head gets a stronger feel from the water you have. If every faucet in the house is weak, the plumbing is the problem, not the head.

Free fix vs. permanent fix

Free fix · 30 minutes to overnight

Vinegar soak and nozzle clean

  • Unscrew the head and rinse the small screen behind it
  • Soak the head in white vinegar in a bag
  • Poke each nozzle with a pin or an old toothbrush
  • Reconnect with fresh plumber's tape

How long it lasts: Months. Soaking clears scale, but hard water rebuilds it and the restrictor stays.

A high-pressure shower head with rubber nozzles

A head cannot add water pressure, but it can change how the water leaves. High-pressure designs narrow the jets so the spray hits harder at the same flow. Rubber nozzles let you rub scale off with a thumb, so the spray stays strong.

What to get: High-pressure shower head with rubber nozzles

How long it lasts: Years. Narrow, shaped jets give a stronger spray, and rubber nozzles wipe clean of scale.

Why it happens

1

Mineral scale in the nozzles

Hard water leaves calcium scale that blocks nozzles. The spray thins, or it shoots out sideways.

2

A clogged screen behind the head

Sediment catches in the small mesh screen where the head meets the arm. It restricts flow for the whole head.

3

A flow restrictor

Most modern heads have a plastic disc that limits flow. The U.S. federal limit is 2.5 gallons per minute at 80 psi, and some states set it lower.

4

A partly closed valve

A shut-off valve behind the wall, or the main valve, is not fully open. This often happens after plumbing work.

5

Low pressure in the whole home

A weak city supply, a failing pressure regulator or old galvanized pipes can lower pressure at every fixture. In an apartment, upper floors and shared risers can run low.

Try this first (free)

Do these in order, starting with the simplest.

  1. Check if it is only the shower

Turn on the sink and kitchen faucets. If they are weak too, the problem is house-wide, so skip to the pressure test at the end.

  2. Unscrew the head and rinse the screen

Turn the head counterclockwise by hand, or use pliers with a cloth around it. Rinse the small screen at the arm and clear out grit.

  3. Soak the head in vinegar

Tool used: White vinegar and a zip-top bag

Fill a bag with white vinegar and tie it over the head so the nozzles are submerged. Soak 30 minutes to overnight. Brushed nickel, brass and oil-rubbed bronze can dull, so limit those to an hour and check the care guide.

  4. Poke each nozzle and rinse

Tool used: Old toothbrush or pin

Scrub the face with a toothbrush and poke each nozzle with a pin. Rinse under the tap, and run water through the back of the head until it flows evenly.

  5. Reconnect with fresh tape

    Tool used: Plumber's tape

Wrap the shower arm threads three or four times clockwise with plumber's tape. Screw the head on by hand, then snug it with a gentle quarter turn.

  6. Test the house pressure

    Tool used: Water pressure gauge

Screw a gauge onto an outdoor faucet or laundry hose bib and open the tap fully. Most homes sit between 40 and 60 psi. A reading under 30 points to a regulator, a closed valve or a supply problem.

When free fixes aren't enough

If the head is clean and the spray is still weak, the head itself is the limit. Old heads have worn parts and a restrictor, and scale returns fast in hard water. A new head with narrow jets and rubber nozzles feels stronger at the same flow and takes a minute to swap. It will not help if house pressure is low. If the gauge shows under 30 psi, other fixtures are weak or pressure dropped suddenly, call a plumber. In an apartment, tell the landlord, because the cause can be the building's riser or pump.

High-pressure shower head with rubber nozzles

Fixes: a weak, thin spray at the head when pressure elsewhere is normal

Look for: Rubber or silicone nozzles you can wipe clean; A flow rate in gpm that is legal where you live; A standard half-inch connection; A strong-jet spray mode.

Who it's for
Anyone with a clean head that still feels weak, or with hard water that clogs heads quickly.
Honest downside
Every faucet in the house is weak. A head cannot raise house pressure, so fix that first.

High-pressure handheld and fixed shower head combo

Fixes: a weak spray and awkward rinsing, in one install

Look for: A diverter to switch between fixed and handheld; A hose long enough to reach the tub; Rubber nozzles on both heads.

Who it's for
Households that rinse kids, pets or the tub.
Honest downside
You just want a simple swap. A single head costs less and installs faster.

How to fix apartment water pressure or house water pressure

If every tap is weak, the head is not the cause. In a house, check that the main shut-off valve is fully open, then ask a plumber to test the pressure regulator. In an apartment, report it to the landlord, since a shared riser or booster pump may be to blame. A new head only improves the spray, not the supply.

What to skip

Drilling out the restrictor or pressure-boosting gadgets

Removing a restrictor can break local water rules and raises water use, and the spray still depends on the supply. Skip filters that promise higher pressure. A filter can only add resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my shower head have low pressure, not enough pressure or no pressure at all?
The usual cause is scale or sediment in the head. If the spray is gone entirely, check the shut-off valve and the screen behind the head. A shower head not getting pressure while other faucets are fine points to the head or its valve.
How to fix shower head pressure, or shower water pressure, when it is weak?
Descale it first. Soak the head in vinegar, clear the nozzles and rinse the screen. If it is still weak, replace the head with a high-pressure one, and test house pressure to rule out the plumbing.
Why is my shower head not spraying hard, and how to stop shower head from spraying everywhere?
Scale blocks some nozzles, so the water takes the open ones and sprays sideways. Descaling and poking each nozzle usually brings the even spray back.
Shower head keeps getting clogged: why does it happen?
Hard water leaves scale every time the water dries on the nozzles. Wipe the face weekly, and soak it every few months. A head with rubber nozzles sheds scale when you rub it.
Why is my shower head not working properly?
Check for scale, a blocked screen, a worn washer or a closed valve. If the head leaks at the connection, wrap fresh plumber's tape on the threads and snug it. If it still fails, replace it.
