Quick answer

When your dryer smells like burning, stop it and unplug it first. The usual cause is lint cooking on a hot part, or a worn belt, or something small that fell inside. Vacuum the lint screen slot and check the drum for stray items, which is free. A long flexible lint brush clears the lint that a vacuum nozzle cannot reach. If you smell gas or see smoke or sparks, leave the dryer off and call a pro.

Free fix vs. permanent fix

Free fix · 20 minutes

Unplug it and clear the lint you can reach

  • Unplug the dryer; for a gas dryer, close the gas valve too
  • Pull the lint screen and vacuum the slot with a crevice tool
  • Check the drum and door opening for stray items
  • Run an empty air-only cycle and sniff

How long it lasts: Fixes the smell if the lint was within reach of a vacuum. Lint deeper in the housing and the duct stays behind and can scorch again.

A long flexible dryer vent brush

Most burning smells are lint scorching on a hot surface. A vacuum nozzle stops at the first bend, but a bendable brush follows the slot and the duct all the way out. Clear that lint once a year and there is nothing left to burn.

What to get: Flexible dryer vent brush kit

How long it lasts: As long as you use it once or twice a year. Lint never gets a chance to pile up where it burns.

Why it happens

1

Lint on or near the heater

Lint that slips past the screen or builds up in the housing can land on the heating element or burner and scorch. It smells like burnt toast or dusty heat.

2

A clogged vent duct

Lint packed in the duct traps heat, so the dryer runs hotter than it should. Clothes take two cycles to dry and the whole machine smells hot.

3

A slipping or worn belt, roller or glide

A worn part rubs against the drum and gives off a hot rubber smell. You may also hear squealing or thumping, or find the drum stiff to turn.

4

Something that should not be in there

A coin, crayon, tissue or a sock that slipped behind the drum can melt or scorch. A plastic smell points to this one.

Try this first (free)

Do these in order, starting with the simplest.

  1. Stop the dryer and unplug it

Pull the plug and let the drum cool for 30 minutes. On a gas dryer, close the gas shutoff valve too. If you smell gas, leave the house and call the gas company from outside.

  2. Pull the lint screen and vacuum the slot

Tool used: Vacuum with a crevice tool

Shine a light into the slot and vacuum with a crevice tool. If water beads on the screen instead of soaking in, wash it with warm water and dish soap and let it dry.

  3. Check the drum and door opening

    Tool used: Flashlight

Look under the drum lip, around the door seal and in the lint trap opening for coins, tissue, crayons or melted plastic. Check every pocket of the next load too.

  4. Brush out the slot and the duct

Tool used: Long flexible dryer vent brush

Pull the dryer forward, loosen the clamp and disconnect the duct. Feed the brush into the lint screen slot, then into both ends of the duct, twisting as you go. Reconnect the duct without crushing it.

  5. Run an air-only cycle

Plug in, run 10 minutes with no heat, then 10 minutes on low heat with an empty drum. Stay nearby and smell for the burning odor. A faint smell that fades fast is fine.

When free fixes aren't enough

If the smell is gone after cleaning, you found it. If it smells like rubber, the drum squeals or thumps, or it is hard to turn by hand with the power off, a belt, roller or glide has worn and needs replacing; a brush cannot fix that. If the smell returns within a few loads, or you see scorch marks, smoke or sparks, leave the dryer off and call an appliance technician. A brush will not do that job, but it will stop lint from building up again once the part is fixed.

Flexible dryer vent brush kit

Fixes: lint packed beyond the reach of a vacuum nozzle

Look for: A flexible shaft that bends around the duct's turns; Extension rods so it can reach a long run; Soft nylon bristles, not bare wire ends; Works by hand or with a power drill.

Who it's for
Anyone who smells burning and has never cleaned past the lint screen.
Honest downside
The smell is rubber and the drum is stiff or squeals. That points to a worn belt or roller, which a brush cannot fix.

Slim lint screen slot brush

Fixes: lint stuck in the lint screen slot and the housing

Look for: A narrow head that fits the lint screen slot; A bendable handle long enough to reach the bottom; Bristles that hold on to lint instead of pushing it deeper.

Who it's for
Someone whose vent run is short and who only needs the lint trap area cleared.
Honest downside
Your duct is long or has many bends. The slot brush will not reach the duct.

Semi-rigid metal dryer vent duct

Fixes: a plastic, sagging or crushed duct that traps lint and heat

Look for: Metal, not plastic or vinyl; The right diameter for your dryer, usually 4 inches; A length that does not need to be bent sharply or crushed.

Who it's for
Anyone whose duct is vinyl or foil-plastic, or has been crushed behind the dryer.
Honest downside
Your duct is already smooth metal and in good shape. Clean it instead.

How we picked: How we picked: this page is based on dryer manuals, fire-safety guidance on lint and venting, repair guides for burning smells, and what owners report in reviews of dryer brushes and vent kits. We do not test products by hand.

What each burning smell usually means

  • Burnt toast or dusty heat: lint on or near the heating element or burner.
  • Hot rubber: a slipping or worn belt, roller or glide.
  • Hot plastic: a melted object or a plastic duct.
  • Sharp, electrical or fishy: a wiring or part problem. Unplug it and call a technician.

How often to clean so it does not come back

Empty the lint screen after every load. Vacuum the slot and brush the duct at least once a year, and more often if you have a big household or a long vent run. A faint dusty smell from a dryer that has sat unused for months can be dust burning off the heater, and it should fade in minutes. A strong smell that lingers is not that.

What to skip

Air freshener and running one more load to see

Covering a burning smell with fabric spray, or running one more load to see whether it goes away, is the risky choice. Lint is flammable, and a smell that is still there means something is still hot. Also skip plastic or vinyl duct. Fire-safety guidance says to use metal duct, because plastic sags, traps lint and can burn.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dryer smell burnt?
Most often, lint has built up on or near a hot part, or in the duct, and is scorching. Less often it is a worn belt or something small caught inside. Cleaning the lint screen slot and the duct is the first step, and the cause is usually found there.
My dryer smells like burning rubber. Is it the belt?
Often, yes. A hot rubber smell points to a worn drum belt, roller or glide, especially with squealing or thumping, or a drum that is hard to turn. Unplug it and turn the drum by hand. If it drags or scrapes, a part needs replacing.
Why does my lint trap smell like burning?
The lint screen sits right beside the heat, so any lint left in the slot or housing can scorch. A screen coated in a film from dryer sheets can also trap heat. Wash the screen and vacuum the slot.
My clothes dryer smells like burning. Is it safe to keep using it?
No. Stop using it until you find the cause. Lint is flammable, and a smell that persists means something is too hot. If it is gone after cleaning, you can run it again. If not, call a technician.
