Kitchen Faucet Sprayer Not Working? Hose, Diverter, or Clog: Find Out
A weak or dead sprayer is usually a clog, a stuck diverter or a worn hose. Check them in that order, and replace the hose if it has failed.

Quick answer
A sprayer that is weak, dead or keeps taking over from the spout has one of three problems: mineral scale in the spray head, a stuck diverter that sends water the wrong way, or a kinked or worn hose. Check them in that order. The clog and the diverter cost nothing to fix. If the hose is cracked, stiff, kinked or leaking, a matching replacement hose is the fix that lasts.
Free fix vs. permanent fix
Descale the head, clear the diverter, straighten the hose
- Soak the spray head in white vinegar and poke out the holes
- Flush the hose into a bucket to clear grit
- Clean the diverter if you have a side sprayer
- Straighten any kink in the hose under the sink
How long it lasts: Months, if hard-water scale or grit was the cause. It will not help a hose that is cracked, stiff or leaking.

A matching replacement sprayer hose
The hose is the part that wears out. A sprayer hose bends and tugs every day, so it stiffens, kinks and cracks inside. If cleaning does not bring back full flow, the hose is the usual cause.
What to get: Replacement kitchen faucet sprayer hose
How long it lasts: Years. A new hose gives full flow and moves freely, with no kinks.

Why it happens
Scale in the spray head
Hard water leaves crust on the nozzle holes and the screen behind them. Water squirts sideways, sprays weakly or stops.
A stuck or worn diverter
The diverter is the small valve that sends water to the spout or the sprayer. Grit or scale can make it stick, so water keeps coming out of the sprayer, comes out of both, or never reaches the sprayer.
A kinked, cracked or clogged hose
Under the sink, the hose can bend, twist or snag on a bottle. Over the years the inner tube cracks and starts to leak or restrict the flow.
A stuck spray-mode button
On a pull-down faucet, grit in the head's mode button can hold it on spray, which is why some faucets keep switching to the sprayer.

Do these in order, starting with the simplest.
-
Check the shutoffs and the hose path
Open both valves under the sink fully. With a flashlight, look along the hose for kinks, tight bends or something pressing on it. Straighten it and test the flow.
-
Soak the spray head in vinegar
Tool used: White vinegar and a bowlUnscrew the spray head or its face plate by hand, turning counterclockwise. Soak it in white vinegar for 30 to 60 minutes. Longer soaks are not needed.
-
Clear every hole
Tool used: Toothpick or pinPoke each nozzle hole with a toothpick, brush off the crust and rinse. Refit the head hand tight.
-
Flush the hose
Tool used: Bucket and towelWith the shutoffs open, unscrew the spray head from the hose end, point the hose into a bucket and run the water for 10 to 20 seconds. This washes out grit.
-
Clean the diverter on a side sprayer
Tool used: Small adjustable wrenchShut off the water, then loosen the spout nut and lift out the spout, as your manual shows. Take out the small diverter, scrub off the scale and refit it. If it is cracked, replace it with the same part.
-
Replace the hose if it is stiff or leaking
Tool used: Replacement sprayer hoseA hose that is cracked, hard, kinked or leaking will not clear with cleaning. Shut off the water, unscrew both ends, note the connector type and fit a matching new hose. Hand-tighten, then give a gentle quarter turn with the wrench.

When free fixes aren't enough
Cleaning fixes scale and grit. It does nothing for a hose that has gone stiff, cracked or kinked inside, and a spray that dies again within days usually points there. A new hose brings back full flow. If you see water under the sink, shut off the valves. If you cannot trace the leak, or the faucet is very old with corroded connections, call a plumber or think about a new faucet.

Replacement kitchen faucet sprayer hose
Fixes: a weak, leaking or kinked sprayer once the head is clean
Look for: Matches your faucet type: pull-down, pull-out or side sprayer; The right length and connector type, so measure the old hose; A braided or reinforced build that resists kinking.
- Who it's for
- Anyone whose cleaning did not bring back full flow, or whose hose is cracked or leaking.
- Honest downside
- The hose is fine and only the head is clogged. A new head costs less.

Replacement spray head

Look for: Fits your faucet brand and thread; The spray and stream modes you use; A clear match to your model.
- Who it's for
- The hose is fine and the head is damaged or clogged beyond vinegar.
- Honest downside
- You cannot confirm it fits. Heads are often brand-specific.

Pull-down kitchen faucet

Look for: Fits your sink's hole count, one or three holes; A hose that retracts smoothly and a head that docks firmly; A solid brass or stainless body.
- Who it's for
- A faucet that is old, with parts you cannot find, or several parts failing.
- Honest downside
- Only the hose is bad. A hose costs far less.

Side sprayer or pull-down? Two different parts lists
- Side sprayer: a separate head on the sink deck with its own hose. Weak flow is usually the head, the hose or the diverter in the spout.
- Pull-down or pull-out: the head sits in the spout. Check the head, the hose under the sink and any weight on the hose.
Before you buy a hose, measure
Measure the old hose from end to end, and note the thread or quick-connect type at each end. A hose that is too short will not reach, and a mismatched connector will leak.
What to skip
Strong acids, pliers and look-alike hoses
Strong descalers left on for hours can strip the finish and harm seals, and vinegar for an hour is plenty. Do not clamp pliers on the spray head, which crushes the threads. And do not buy a hose by looks: if the connector does not match, it leaks under the sink.
